Re: Star Trek: Picard

I haven't watched this, yet. But his drunken articulations are usually spot on.

[Edit: I've watched it, now. Pay particular attention to 10:58 to 11:05; it's a summation of his in my opinion time-on-target analysis.]

Re: Star Trek: Picard

It didn't redeem the season, and I found the "Seven is a lesbian now!" denouement tiresome, but ... yeah. It was enjoyable in a rather predictable fashion.

Re: I now understand why I don't like modern Star Trek

In point of fact, I think you're spot on as relates to certain elements of modern Trek , and it gave me pause before I wrote the above quasi-essay/mini rant. But, ultimately, I disagree (with the methodology, not your wholly valid point), in that I feel modern Trek is wallowing in grit and barely th...

Re: I now understand why I don't like modern Star Trek

Note that I didn't say it sucked (though I don't think Season One of Discovery is must-see TV). I didn't even say I'll stop watching. Hell, I'll not even go so far as to say it's TINA ( Trek in Name Alone ), though I may have said just that in the past. But it's Trek as angry, moody Goth teen, rathe...

I now understand why I don't like modern Star Trek

I'm still watching. But for a decade-and-a-half, now, I've been grimacing more than grinning. It isn't because I'm an inflexible grognard. I may well be an inflexible grognard, but that's not the reason. It isn't because it's all incompetently written. I don't like many of the decisions the writers ...

Re: Star Trek: Picard

I've just started Eight, and it's already grating on my nerves. Of course, it's only women who have a genuine grasp on what's really going on, and why their acts of terror are entirely justified. I don't like the perversion of nuns into something horrific. As a Catholic, I find it slightly off-putti...

Re: Star Trek: Picard

OK. Having seen "Nepenthe" ... ... it seemed to me a bone to the old-school Trekkies, and not a sea change in thematic direction. I enjoyed it, but ... it doesn't in any way restore my hope that this series will rekindle my love for Trek . I'll watch the rest of the season, since I think there are o...

Re: Star Trek: Picard

I think Sirus makes valid points. But I shall stick it out at least until having seen Episode Seven. Right now I'm watching the early stages of Episode Five. Guys ... six whole episodes is a huge investment of my valuable time. I hope this proves worth it. Star Trek: Discovery Season One didn't, tho...

Re: Star Trek: Picard

I'm about a fifth of the way through Episode Four.

I never imagined saying this, but ... Star Trek: Picard is not holding my attention. I'm literally watching it in four- and five-minute spurts.

I think my forty-five year affair with Star Trek may be over.

Re: I've recently re-watched "Devil's Due" ...

Another example is "Rightful Heir."

Why couldn't it have actually been Kahless? Once again, the facile, secular way out.

Re: I've recently re-watched "Devil's Due" ...

Perhaps, but the Devil has already been in Star Trek... Not quite. The crew speculates after the incident whether Lucien was actually the Devil, so there's plenty of wiggle room. In addition, the Animated Series is only intermittently canonical, so ... Other than that I find the episode interesting...

Re: I've recently re-watched "Devil's Due" ...

Excellent observations. I think, in the series bible, one would have to make clear that exacting definitions of "Ardra" would never be forthcoming. To do so definitively as either a supernatural being or one of ultimate evolution would prove an error, in that it would encapsulate him/her/it, and giv...

I've recently re-watched "Devil's Due" ...

... and, frankly, I think they missed a golden opportunity here.

The episode could have been much more interesting if Ardra, in point of fact, had been the Devil.

Opinions?

I LOVE to say, "I told you so!"

No one listens. I said: Yeah, the Niners have a great defense, and will laboriously build a lead. They will contain Mahomes and the Chiefs while looking impressive—until the Chiefs inevitably explode. I was right ... AGAIN. We're not in the 20th century anymore, grognards. OFFENSE wins championships.

Fortunately for you, there's an entire internet out there, most of which does not include reviews by The Critical Drinker.

Enjoy.
