I never noticed until now ...

... but the scene in which Luke and Princess Leia swing across the chasm in Star Wars is taken almost directly from The 7th Voyage of Sinbad . I'm sure someone must have made the comparison before, but ... still. I mean, the hero's even got a princess on his back in both scenes. If you're going to s...

Re: Actual Trailer:Good Omens

Is it possible to be simultaneously delighted and offended by such material? I'm trying to remember if this is Pratchett or Gaiman, both of whom I categorize as intermittently wonderful but also slightly overrated. Funny how non-believers of this sort are fascinated by angels, demons and such. Somet...

What book are you reading?

Since this seems to have disappeared, I'll resurrect it. I'm reading Sicily: An Island at the Crossroads of History , by the late and very much lamented John Julius, Viscount of Norwich. He died in June, and his love of my ancestors' home was apparent: His first two works, and one of his last, decad...

JM's Top Twenty-Five, Week Ending 9/29/2018

1 Alabama 5-0 The Tide looks more like a hurricane. 2 Notre Dame 5-0 This is one hell of a schedule they're navigating. 3 Louisiana State 5-0 Winning kinda ugly, but still winning. It's LSU's way. 4 Georgia 5-0 Nothing spectacular yet. 5 Ohio State 5-0 They did not win that game. Penn State lost it...

Re: JM's Top Twenty-Five, Week Ending 9/22/2018

I wouldn't say "inherent," as did lafr, but ... men, in general, are more biologically wired to compete. (Women, in general, are more about reaching an understanding than kicking your ass.) Sports allows men to "go to war" without anyone dying. And then we can do it again next week/tomorrow/right no...

Re: Trailer:Captain Marvel

Honestly, Larson looks a bit too butch/not quite pretty enough to play Captain/Ms. Marvel for me. I understand the casting choice, and can't really fault it, but ... like Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman lacking seven to ten pounds of lean muscle (which, despite her excellent work, she still does), it's ju...

JM's Top Twenty-Five, Week Ending 9/22/2018

1 Alabama 4-0 On the eye test alone, they look invincible. 2 LSU 4-0 Two best quality wins of the season. 3 Ohio State 4-0 Offense to spare, but they give up points. The winner next week against Penn State possibly jumps into the top spot. 4 Stanford 4-0 Great comeback, but it never should have hap...

I suspect that the old lady was a Skrull or Mystique in disguise.
Either that, or Danvers had a reunion with her kindergarten teacher.
