You know, that hadn't occurred to me, John. Excellent point.

I'll ponder it further.
That's a matter that could support either side of the argument, though. The US Navy has never reused the names Arizona, Utah, or Oklahoma out of respect to those vessels lost at Pearl Harbor. While the USS Arizona memorial does ensure that the ship (and the state that it got its name from) would be remembered far longer than most, there's also the matter of respect for those who died.

Then there's just the plain old superstition regarding reusing the name of such a vessel. Yes, the Enterprise-D did get destroyed and was replaced with the Enterprise-E.... but the large majority of her crew survived, so it wasn't nearly as grievous of a destruction as the Arizona's.

Then the Enterprise line should have stopped after Narendra III, since the -C was lost with all hands.

You could always say there was an earlier Starfleet ship named Arizona - perhaps a "destroyer escort" type like Joe mentioned - that was involved in a major historical event and thus gave the name Arizona additional historical importance.

Just a thought.

On another note, that's a well-done manip, Joe. Looks like he's actually wearing the uniform. :/

Completely different circumstances. It took Starfleet nearly 20 years before they were willing to dub another vessel Enterprise, which shows that they are at least in some fashion respectful of ships that were lost. The Enterprise-C's loss was integral in building stronger relations with the Klingon Empire. If nothing else, it's sensible for Starfleet to reuse the name in order to remind the Klingons of the sacrifice that was made for them.

Of course, the USN's Arizona is something of a special circumstance, as the Navy retains title to the wreck and thus retains the right to fly the US flag above it as if it were still in commission (though, unlike the USS Constitution, it isn't). Thus, the US Navy will likely never commission another USS Arizona, but there's nothing to say that Starfleet would follow that tradition.

Indeed, they may commission starships specifically to honor those vessels lost in Earth's various wars. Just because humans tend not to reuse the names of sunken ships doesn't mean other member species do. It could be an Andorian tradition to give a vessel's spirit a new body when one is lost...

After all, we've seen Yamato and Kongo in canon.

I remember reading somewhere that one of Arizona's congressmen submitted a bill about naming one of the Gerald R. Fords as the Arizona. CVN-80 still doesn't have a name yet, but it looks like it'll be named after a WWII battle if the article I read is anything to go by.

There's also a huge push to name CVN-80 Enterprise, since CVN-65 is slated to be retired about the time that ship is ready for commissioning.

As one of the men behind Citadel, I have to say that you hit Yineth Nikara spot on with this manipulation, Mister Manno. My congratulations to you. Hopefully, this pleases Doom. :/

Due to the Arizona's history and I am from Arizona, I am born and Raised here... I consider the Defiant-Class To be the most ideal to bear the name.

I believe it is now official that CVN80 is to be named Enterprise.

Anyway, I'm new here, I would like to use some of these free use characters for my stories and would like to thank the various artists who produced them Just want to check that its ok to do so.

I'm still struggling to find some of my crew, in particular, a fairly large Klingon engineer, a female bolian comms officer, an African American security officer (male) and a South American helm officer (male). Anyone got any suggestions? they all wear the black and grey First contact uniforms.

You are correct, though I was off a bit about CVN-65's retirement date...

"Free use" means precisely that. Knock yourself out.

I did this one some years ago to amuse myself. It's tennis player James Blake, who rose to number four in the world, and reached the quarters at the US Open, losing an epic five-setter to Andre Agassi. If you think it might serve, I could alter the command red to ops gold.

I was going to add a background, but ... to be honest, I just don't feel like it.
