::OT::

This is not directed a[t] CamSPD, by any means, but is instead meant almost rhetorically: Why does every nurse in Trek have to graduate into doctor status, as if nurse isn't a noble calling in and of itself? Again, Cam's done nothing remotely objectionable here, and it's a nice-lookin' manip. I just think nursing gets dissed somewhat in Trek.

Was Alyssa Ogawa a nurse? Or a Junior med? I don't remember...

That's actually a good point, Joe. But then, Ogawa did become a doctor once, albeit in an alternate reality... Who knows, maybe the ship for which she was intended will get another doctor and she will return to being the chief of nursing.

i get the feeling though that a nurse would be restricted to a certain rank (lieutenant most likely) and to advance would have to become a doctor....

There's no reason a nurse can't be a higher rank than lieutenant. Restricting rank advancement because of specialty makes absolutely no sense.

i doubt for example that a nurse could ever outrank a doctor.....imagine if a nurse is a commander and the CMO of the ship a lieutenant

he or she would never have to obey the doctor and could in fact legally order the CMO to do something that they otherwise couldn't...

Um, dude... there's nothing that says a nurse can't outrank a doctor. Even if a nurse is a full commander and the CMO a lieutenant commander or even a lieutenant, that person is the CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER, meaning the person in charge of the entire medical department. Regardless of rank, the Chief of Nursing would have to follow his or her orders.

Besides, we have seen canon evidence where certain officers have held high rank, but one who has ranked under them has held a higher position: Troi and Crusher both outranked Data, yet he was Second Officer of the Enterprise.
