Noodle about the Feline races

Post by jayphailey » Fri Aug 31, 2007 9:05 am

Note -

Cat Furries - I like 'em. Blame the Preservers, blame Hodgekin's law of parrallel evolution, whatever. I have a faint affection for furries and so I use them as aliens in Jay-Trek. Sue me.

Qzin and Not Kzin - this was a "Mal-a-type-ism" from Garry Stahl and we kept it (We being Garry and myself) . This allows the Qzin to be large tiger furry warrior people, without having to cope with Niven's specs on the Kzin.

Noodle - the Feline Races

In Jay-Trek, there are several cultures of feline folk. However physically the feline races are all related and inter fertile.*1

Types of Felinoids:

Caitians - Caitians are human sized or slightly smaller. They generally bear colors like Terran house cats. Females occasionally have manes but this is rare enough so it is not surprising to find an individual with no mane.

Generally, Caitians are the smallest and most sociable of the feline races. They have a more open "people" button and enjoy getting meeting new people.

Caitians can be muscular, fast and even large, However as a general thing, Caitians praise energy weapons as the great equalizers.

- Eeiouans and Sivoans, a distinct Culture of Caitians discovered between 2250 (Eeiou) and 2272 (Sivao) these Caitian peoples had star travel generations ago and were fully formed cultures when contacted by the Federation. Eeiou joined the Federation as soon as possible, Sivao was more diffident but eventually joined.

Tzinkethi - These feline people are reminiscent of Panthers. They tend to be slightly larger, slightly denser than Caitians. The Tzinkethi are suspicious and hostile towards non-Felinoids, their people button is narrow. The Tzinkethi have fought a war with the Federation and make it plain they have no interest in relating to most of the Federation. They accept other Felinoids grudgingly.

In the past, the Tzinkethi were abused by humanoids, probably the Orions - they see humanoids as "the Enemy", a cultural element that is written heavily into their history. They will not willingly let it go. However - the Federation is becoming the enemy they are "Comfortable" with, the people at which they are content to snarl and hiss.

Qzin - the Qzin are the largest of the Feline people. They are reminiscent of tigers. The Qzin came up seeing themselves as the greatest carnivores and hunters in the galaxy - a master race to kill and eat all others at will.

A brutal and ugly war with the Early Federation hurled the Qzin back into their own space.

One on one the Qzin are as deadly as any race in known space.

A second major war against an Orion/Klingon coalition also led to the defeat of the Qzin. Although huge and dangerous, fierce warriors one-on-one, the Qzin tend to attack before they are ready, and fight impatiently.

For the last 100 years, the Qzin have engaged in piracy, mercenary campaigns, crime and other nefarious activities, with mixed success. Attempts by the Qzin government to sponsor espionage or crime rings tend to fall apart spectacularly.

The Qzin are borrowing heavily from the Tzinkethi method and turning to hostile isolationism.

The Tzinkethi, Lyrans and Qzin love to hate each other and fight bitterly. While the Feline people see competing feline warriors as frightening threats and competition, at least they are operating on rules that all felinoids can empathize with.

Lyrans - these Feline people visually resemble leopards. They are smaller on the average than the Qzin and average somewhere between the Caitians and the Tzinkethi.

They are a warrior people. Quickly gaining technology from the Klingons, the Orions and the Qzin, they built a large space navy and came out swinging. The Lyrans are prideful and prickly. They are proud of their independence. The Lyrans often kill and eat diplomats from other races.

The Lyrans love to hate the Qzin, and have on-again, off again alliances with them, which last just long enough for one side or the other to take a cheap back shot and restart the fighting.

Both the Lyrans and the Qzin border the Klingons and fight harshly to stay out from under the Klingon thumb. The Klingons vacillate between respect for the warrior skills of the felines, and a harsh desire to conquer them.

Lyrans divide their space into houses, kingdoms and even one Lyran Democratic Republic. However fighting among themselves is a poor second to their favorite sport of fighting Qzin and Klingons.

-*-

The Caitains are social people, They are relentlessly friendly towards the Lyrans, Qzin and the Tzinkethi. Although a Human can make a Caitain enemy with great effort, Caitains generally seem to like humans and humanoids, considering them exotic and amusing.

The cosmopolitan nature of the Caitains expresses itself in different ways, roughyl divided into two forms of Cosmopolitanism - A and B, this cosmopolitan ism sometimes crops up among individuals of the other felinoid races.

Cosmopolitain A: Caitians often enjoy wandering known space, exploring, meeting people and trading. Caitian starship crew people are commonly encountered. There are many, many Caitian registered traders and scout ships.

Among these one may encounter "Caitains" who have a suspicious resemblance to members of other felinoid races. It is an open secret that among space going Caitins "Caitian" is considered a cultural choice available to felinoids and not a biological reality. The rare Lyran, Qzin or Tzinkethi with a yen to travel and explore can approach a Caitian party, declare himself "Caitin" and be accepted - at least provisionally. this acceptance will grow as the newcomer proves himself a responsible member of the ships crew (or party member) and not someone out looking for easy "Monkey meat"

These cosmopolitan Caitians are common, their Felinoid "Caitian" companions are very rare indeed. They maintain a fiction to humanoid outsiders that they are all Caitian - and receive strong support. Qzin, Tzinkethi and Lyran individuals have been claimed as citizens of Cait, even life long citizens of Cait to Starfleet officers and ships with a completely straight face.

The free adoption of outside felinoids by the Caitians sort of works in reverse. A Caitian who shows up among the Tzinkethi, the Lyrans or the Qzin will not be killed and eaten outright. But he will never over come official suspicion. He may be accepted by a circle of friends among his new people, but will never rise to high military rank or gain access to any juicy secrets.

Most such expatriates have been killed in disputes early on.

Although the Tzinkethi, Lyrans and Qzin have a much narrower people button - for all Felinoids the "people" button works for other felinoids.

This does not mean a fellow Felinoid won't be considered an outsider, a traitor, a suspicious individual or a criminal. But he won't be killed out of hand as a monster either.

The easy acceptance of humans and others by the Caitians is considered disturbing among the other felinoids (Although rare individuals among them may be as accepting) - Right thinking Qzin, Tzinkethi and Lyrans consider such xeno-philia perverse and "Icky".

Cosmopolitan B - there is an underground of space going Caitians who prefer to deal mainly with felinoids. There are known colonies, towns and settlements of mostly or all Caitian residents. There are rumors of hidden Caitian only ships. settlements and places*2

In these Cait-centric places - Qzin, Lyran and Tzinkethi visitors are more common. non-Caitians are tolerated with varying degrees of discomfort and awkwardness Caitians, being social will not voluntarily close their doors to visitors, but prefer short visits by only a few. Lyran, Qzin and Tzinkethi residents will be more openly hostile and unwelcoming.

A hidden settlement that gets visited a lot or by a big Starfleet ships may well be abandoned by Felinoids who move on seeking more feline only locales.

Outsiders who behave abusively or violently in such an "enclave" may be attacked, driven off or imprisoned by residents.

-*-

In the last 15 years, three of these multi-felinoid enclaves have become more or less out in the open, including a nominally Federation Colony on the planet Cretaceous.

The Federation has surprised suspicious anti-primate felinoids by genially ignoring these places. *3

Physical Traits

The Feline races are a mix of feline and humanoid characteristics, they are not related to Earth humans or earth Felines, but have physiological elements very similar. Enough to make the comparison viable for this discussion.

Compared to humans the Feline folk have faster reflexes and better hand-eye coordination, although the ranges of capability overlap.

Compared to humans The Feline folk lack long term endurance - their energy cycle is biased towards short, intense bursts of energy and rests.

Compared to humans feline folk are more vulnerable to bruising and blunt force trauma.

The feline folk have developed claws on their feet and can deliver deadly kicks. The claws on their hands are very small. In any game system they'd be identical to finger nails. technological feline folk will leverage their poor hand claws with spears, swords and add-on claws.

The Feline folk have hands that are very similar to human hands - except for fur and the obvious derivation of the finger nails from cat claws.

This is physiologically surprising - There's no good reason for cat paws to evolve into structures that similar to human hands - simulations of Feline evolution into a humanoid shape wind up with a different but entirely functional hand shape.*1

In size the Feline folk range from Caitians - about human sized to Qzin up to 500 lbs and 8 feet tall, (Usually closer to 350 lbs and seven feet tall)

There may be smaller feline folk around but if so they haven't been discovered yet.

Feline folk and Terran felines do not get along well. The body language is close enough to cause confusion - the Feline folk are large enough and strange enough for Terran felines to consider them threatening. Similarly Terran felines often hit the "Uncanny Divide" for feline folk. They are close enough to be just wrong.

The few Feline folk who have been introduced to Terran dogs seem to get along well with them. A few dogs have been imported to Cait. Dogs who are introduced to Feline folk properly don't seem to see them much differently than humans

Footnotes.

*1 The Felinoid races were uplifted by the Rishans - who grafted hands structurally similar to human hands into their design - the design is fully functional but visibly breaks the tendencies shown by natural evolution.

The Felinoids were used as labor, support, friends and pets by the Rishans, sometimes all at once. When the Rishans left, Felinoids left behind quickly fell into primitivism and then recovered.

*2 Rumors of such places are true - there are Felinoid "barter fairs" hang outs, colonies and settlements which are thoroughly Felinoid *only*. But these are small. Sometimes a Felinoid of any of the four sub-races will get grumpy, out-of-sorts, anti-social or find he just dislikes non felinoids and/or crowded places in general.

Qzin, Tzinkethi and Lyran attempts to turn such places into hidden bases of espionage or for military uses lead to a mass exodus by anti-social felinoids, and are often ratted out to Starfleet intelligence.

These are small because the whole point is to run off into the bushes and snarl at everyone or to leave the chaos of the galaxy behind.

Rumors of hidden Felinoid cities, starbases, capital ships and sleets are false. These rumors crop up among people who don't like Felinoids, the suspicious and among feline liars who like to kid the gullible.

*3 Starfleet Intelligence and the Federations Civilian intelligence Services have known of these enclaves for years. Many in the UFP view the interactions between the Caitians and their feline cousins as a wedge that will eventually lead to acceptance of the Federation by the rest. Qzin, Tzinkethi and Lyrans have been known to react violently to people who voice this.

There is an unspoken agreement, that, so long as the Caitians keep things from getting out of hand that it's really not a problem. This means that, should a given Anti-social hidden enclave become a problem for the Federation - a principally Caitain crewed cruiser or frigate will be sent to "deal with it" - either by making such a pest of themselves that the enclave is abandoned or by forcing criminal, piratical or hostile felinoids to abandon it.

The hope is that by publicly ignoring the Felinoid enclave on Cretaceous, the Federation will signal that it is amenable to contact by the Qzin, the Tzinkethi or the Lyrans.

but that will take a long time - because generally the Lyrans, Qzin or Tzinkethi that are seen in such places are independent minded free thinkers, or people who have left Qzin, the Lyran worlds or Tzinkethi because they feel stifled and oppressed. Either way, influencing the foreign policy of their respective home worlds is not high on the agenda.

Liberty's Head Counselor, the Felisian M'Raav Hatshepsut, has been asked, in all innocence, why she doesn't have a cat.

Her concise response? "Why don't you have a monkey?"

I heard a news story a couple of weeks ago about a guy who smuggled a monkey onto a plane under his hat. Apparently it was about the size of your hand. a monkey that size actually sounds cute.

If he could get along with my cats...

It may well have been a pygmy marmoset.

They are adorable.

She was a smart gurl? :D

I can write a story with a Smart character in it, but still have the story itself not work.

Why are the Aenar there? Why did they move into hidden ice caves? What did that get them? Were they all blind, or just the one ?
