Eeroksa

This planet is at the edge of known space, just a little past where normal folks go. It is on the frontiers of several powers, in a sort of "Star Desert" where, because of one thing and another a lot of uninteresting stars wound up.

The Federation has been basically ignoring the region, feeling that the collection of red dwarves and stellar remnants are not worth the trouble.

However in an amongst this stuff is fairly ordinary yellow dwarf star that is about 7 billion years old.

Orbiting this star is the planet Eeroksa. Eeroksa is class M. It has atmosphere you can breathe without mechanical leverage. The very few life forms are convention in design and construction.

But Eeroska is an old world. It is dying. the slow brightening of its' star has left the world a little over cooked.

Water is scarce on Eeroska. Most of the planet is parched desert. Vulcans find it homey in some ways.

The seas are mostly evaporated brine.

The seas are lower in deuterium content than they should be. At one time Eeroska held a technological civilization which sustained itself on fusion, powered by native deuterium.

The ancient civilization left ruins, but many have been picked over by successive generations.

No one knows who founded a colony on Eeroksa. There is the remains of an old colony plant. A coherent set of buildings and infrastructure. but that was centuries ago. subsequent residents hacked things up to suit themselves.

The current inhabitants of Eeroska are a motley mix of space travelling people, orions, humans and others.

The core ruler of Eeroska is a warlord, Ridogao. He and his band of thugs, fighters and ex-pirates rule the place with an Iron fist. Ridogao has dreams of turning the place into a major hidden pirate base, with himself as the ruler.

He has no idea how many times Eeroska has devoured that very same dream in times past.

Word circulates among the underworld in various places, giving the name and location of Eeroska. Pirates and Villains on the run occasionally happen by - only to be disappointed at the poverty and inadequacy of the place.

Refugees, fugitives and severely damaged pirate vessels form the main method of adding new population to the world. Ridogao confiscates ships and materiel from people too weak to resist him. He tries vainly to create alliances with people who are as powerful or more so than he.

On the outskirts of the main settlement, people try to eke out a living growing sad little food plants and animals which are purchased by people in the main settlement - when they aren't stolen outright.

Further out, people live as nomads, scavenging through ancient ruins and tryng to get by as best as they can.

There is a gas giant world in the system with enough hydrogen and oxygen to make enough water to drown Eeroska. But ships that try to scoop material disappear, occasionally with garbled distress calls. The Gas Giant seems to be eating them.

The Gas Giant's Punchline - Two hundred thousand years ago, the Iconians had "Instant Elsewhere" gateways. This made them enormously powerful and hated. They were destroyed in a massive war.

Most of the Iconian gateways found have been roughly people sized, about four meters across.

But the Iconans had bigger ones. The one in the Gas Giant at Eeroska is roughly 500 meters across. It hooks at random to other 500 meter gateways abandoned across the Galaxy.

The one at Eeroska was an "Escape route" - a hidden bail out location for Iconian ships. When a ship comes close, it grabs them with an amazingly powerful tractor beam and jams them through the gate. The original purpose of this was to allow damaged Iconian starships to fleet pursuit.

Where the other gate locations are is left as an excercise for the writer or GM.

Now, someone who could capture a comet, an icy asteroid or moonlet could own Eeroska... for all the good that would do them. It's such a ratty place, no one has bothered.

Eeroska is in a continual state of collapse, refueled by desperate people from outside.

The common forms of dress on Eeroska are ratty work clothing, or ratty and dirty leathers and random bits of armor. Tools and weapons are old and about worn out. Nothing is thrown away until it is used all the way up.

I really like this one, Jay.

Do you mind if I use it in Dark Horizon at some point?

Hmmm... he certainly has dramatic possibilities.
