Paramount Pictures seek to end rpgs as we know them!

Post by Captain Albertson » Fri Apr 01, 2011 9:12 am

A federal court has decided Paramount Pictures has the authority to
require Star Trek fan fiction websites to pay royalties even if no
income is generated.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled unanimously Thursday in
favor of Paramount Pictures, mandating that all Star Trek-themed fan
fiction websites register with the film production company for the
purpose of paying royalties based on policy to be later set by
Paramount.

The decision was a blow to Star Trek fan fiction websites, commonly
referred to as simulations or sims, which argued registration and
royalties violate freedom of speech. In a 34-page opinion, the judges
disagreed, saying "Star Trek" is a registered trademark, and therefore
property of Paramount Pictures.

Immediately following the ruling, Paramount Pictures released a
statement declaring that official policy will be finalized in four to
six weeks. Since very few fan fiction websites generate income,
Paramount is expected to charge royalties based on membership and
participation. All affected websites that refuse to participate will
be forced to choose a different theme.

Several major websites are expected to appeal the decision.

Too bad Andy Griffith was a CBS production which is now the cbs paramount parent company. So It's only a matter of time the president is set.

Well, Les Moonves (the president of CBS) is rather vocal about his hatred of all things Trek.

Personally, I don't think it'll hold up. Paramount previously issued a public statement that it would NOT charge licensing or seek royalties for fan activities of any kind, so long as they were done as non-profit. This would be a complete reversal of that long-standing policy, and the basis for an appeal to the SCOTUS.

That is what I would say as well Captain. It's not the first time I've heard that rumour, and strangely enough it was about the beginning of April as well.

Also who/what is Andy Griffith? ):(

Ah, okay... Found the preamble on the net (names removed to protect the guilty):
Dear Fleet Commanders,

In case you don't know me, I'm _________, Chief of Fleet Operations
at _________, a fellow Star Trek simming group. I
invite you to participate in an April Fools' Day Joke that _________ and I will be pulling on our fleet tomorrow. I've attached
a few goofy images of "Super Space Command 3000," and have included a
fake AP story below. I'm sure you can figure out the rest.

Please let me know if your fleet is going to participate with us! If
you do play along, post your "new website" by 8 am tomorrow morning.
Afterwards, maybe we could gather up all the different reactions we
get.

Nope, still none the wiser.

It may have been a big hit in the States, but it never made it across the Atlantic. That and it finished fourteen years before I was born :D

That and the fact it was a 60s sitcom make it all the more unlikely that anyone would ever start a photomanipulation forum for the show. :D
