There was one mission where I had to explore a sector, and yes there was some fighting to be had..But this one planet had this weird plant my science officer detected, and requested we beam down. So beam down we did, we scanned some of the plants and returned to the ship. It was a very short mission, but VERY Star Trek. I love it's inclusion.
Yeah there are various mission setups like that: Providing Aid to planets, escorting colonists or miners, studying scientific anomaly both on planet and in orbit, etc. The game FEELS like star trek. :)

I just had one where some seismic sensors were acting up and I had to beam down and repair them.

Speaking of beaming down to planets; the locales are really pretty and very unique in some places! Definitely fills the "strange worlds" criteria.

I picked up my Collector's Edition this morning. So I have the CE and the Digital Deluxe Edition, and Lifetime Subscription, giving me access to EVERY era of uniform and ship registry, plus Joined Trills and Liberated Borgs as playable characters. Oh right...and because I got my CE at GameStop I have an extra ship: An original Constitution-class which I've named the USS Republic.

And the commbadge from the CE is awfully nice. :)

Did you see the images I posted in the 3D Art Forum from the game? Also, do you hang out in the STO IRC channel?
I think I saw them. I will go look. I do not know anything about the STO IRC channel. Does it appear in the game screen? I will check that out.

During the open beta you were off line when I was playing. I guess I was offline when you were playing. Once I got a notice that you'd just logged out. I yelled "Crap!" at having missed you.

QUICK!

I am either Making Chief Joseph Fleet, or STPMA Fleet! Some one reply or e-mail me. I'll be monitoring until the end of my turn this afternoon.

Playng STO today, I had a wonderful encounter.

Got a patrol where we had to go discuss invasion, robbery and violanc with large Orion Fleets.

The second thing I noticed is that Orion Heavy Cruisers have a Poop Deck. Not making it up. Tall super structure aft, with windows and the whole nine yards - reminscent of cinematic pirate ships. I expected to see jack Sparrow firing a black powder pistol at me. They look lovely.

But better -

I got to see a classic, cherry TOS style Constitution class wade into the Orions, handing out blue phaser beams like she was buying them whole sale. Oh, She was BEAUTIFUL! And I got to slide up on her Starboard side, providing supporting fire, and shouting back at my screen "THAT'S RIGHT! THAT'S HOW WE ROLL OLD SCHOOL! HOW DO YOU LIKE THAT YOU GREEN F****ERS!? HANH!?!?!"

Okay.

I got a little excited. Gimme a break.

I wish the screen caps had worked.
