A lot more information on the new series can be found here:

http://www.ew.com/article/2016/08/10/st ... -tv-series

A couple of nice tidbits:
Spoiler:
The star won’t be the captain but rather be a lieutenant commander, “with caveats,” he said. “We’ve seen six series from the captain’s point of view, to see a character from a different perspective on the starship, one who has a diff dynamic relationships with a captain with subordinates, it gave us richer context.”
Spoiler:
Star Trek: Discovery to be set in the “Prime universe” (so set in the original shows’ timeline, not the J.J. Abrams reboot timeline) about 10 years before Captain Kirk’s five-year mission. “We can redefine the visual style,” he said. “We get to play with all of the iconography of those ships and that universe. Since we are doing this series in 2016 and all of the other series have been produced [at a time that] isn’t as sophisticated as we are now with what we can do production-wise, we’re going to be reestablishing an entire look for the series — not only for the series, but for what we wanted to accomplish with Star Trek beyond this series.”
Spoiler:
How close will the Discovery look like the Enterprise: “Saucer section, the cells and the design that we leaked early on has changed considerably. But it’s still very much inspired by those [Ralph McQuarrie] illustrations.”
After reading this, I am actually feeling optimistic about this new show.

i was excited about the post-TUC pre-TNG period initially rumored more so than the one they finally picked. but that's fine as long as its the prime universe, which i'm beyond elated about.

i'm chomping at the bit for the series to start.

i haven't watched beyond and will probably wait to watch it

This first one is about the spoilers that Michael posted:
Spoiler:
Given that the series will start in about 2255, I'm wondering if Captain Pike or Number One might make an appearance.
Whilst this one is sort of related to the one above, though more about something I'd had a concept for, though never did anything else with:
Spoiler:
I actually had an idea for a fanfic piece that saw Number One as a Captain, in line to take command of the Enterprise after Pike. But then he offered her a different option, the first Titan-Class long-range explorer, designed to last for longer than five years on it's own in deep space. I called the ship Titan because the design was that of the proposed "Planet of the Titans" redesign for the Enterprise--which the Discovery also is. It was a way of explaining what happened to her, why she wasn't next in line for command, and why Pike went to Spock and not his trusted XO for help in returning to Talos.

the only concern would be the fact whoopi goldberg is 20 years older than she was the last time she did any star trek scene and this series is over a century before TNG.....

There are probably a dozen ways to explain that away.

It would be fun to see her on the new show. 8)

without being racist, all be it a compliment, black people and especially black women age well, unlike pasty white people their skin does not show the blemishes and marks.

And also suspension of belief is usually required for any tv show and no different in star trek

Great... this just gives them an excuse to screw up the timeline even worse.

What is going on with this show? )wtf(

From: http://www.comingsoon.net/tv/news/80439 ... -discovery
First the bad news, as CBS All Access has announced that Star Trek: Discovery has once again been delayed from its May premiere date.

“Production on Star Trek: Discovery begins next week. We love the cast, the scripts and are excited about the world the producers have created,” representatives for the series told THR. “This is an ambitious project; we will be flexible on a launch date if it’s best for the show. We’ve said from the beginning it’s more important to do this right than to do it fast. There is also added flexibility presenting on CBS All Access, which isn’t beholden to seasonal premieres or launch windows.”

i'm elated about some of the cast:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonequa_Martin-Green (i'm personally not familiar with her but i know she's a very popular character on walking dead and another show or 2)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelle_Yeoh (she's immensely popular in asia and other areas of the world from the james bond movie she did and dozens of martial arts movies; and also crouching tiger)

i'm not familiar with the others, here's the list.
