... proved somewhat disappointing.

I expected far more cleverness from Seth MacFarlane. This seemed a lot like intermittently humorous fan fiction.

Opinions?

Well, just finished watching it with my mom. She laughed and enjoyed it, and I really enjoyed it. It felt like watching Star Trek and that was all I really wanted from it. I loved the look of the ship, the details of that model was amazing. I thought the plot and solution to problem with the Krill was really clever and well placed in advance. It wasn't a laugh riot, but I don't think it was written to be. All in all I'd say it was a moderately funny Star Trek fanfiction.

I've already prepped some screencaps to begin using the uniforms for photomanipulations in the future. I like the uniforms and when I can I hope to get one, hopefully if I wear one to a Star Trek Con no one will hate me to much.

You are, it would seem, more easily pleased than I am.

Perhaps I should envy you.

Perhaps, but then again I read that it was like TNG fanfiction before I saw the first episode so I went into it expecting a love letter to TNG storytelling with poop jokes. That's what I got. I also got some good jokes, some lame ones, a clever use of a plot point, and same decent visuals. I saw it as a call back to the Star Trek I grew up with. It didn't need to break new ground or reinvent the wheel. It just needed to make me feel like that kid I used to be watching the adventures of the crew as the dealt with a problem, always trying to keep the peace while being willing to fight. I wanted a bright future again. The Orville gave me that.

Obviously what it gave you and what it gave me differ.

The jury is still out.

download it off a torrent.

I expected it to be a standard yank type teenager humour show but with science fiction, and that is what it was.
I was not disappointed as I set my expectations low enough.

I will watch it each week for what it is and not as some sort of trek substitute.

I thought the first episode was good. However, I would like to see more of the show before I make a review on it. I'm just crazy that way.

Thanks to FltCpt. Bossco for my Tattok avatar. This is Tattok when he assumed the position of Commander-in-Chief, Starfleet in the year 2411.

Finally had a chance to watch it.

Wasn't great but wasn't terrible, had a few chuckles along the way but wasn't quite the level of humour I was expecting--which was surprising (I do wonder if the comedy element might be played down over time to become more of a sci-fi show). I like the cast, but after one episode you can't really say much about the dynamics of them some nice banter and I like the mundane elements of real life in a futuristic setting (does make a new universe seem real and relatable). The ships and stations look great, the sets are very reminiscent of TNG (not a bad thing), and its nice to see lots of aliens going about as well.

It was enough to make me want to watch the second episode and see where the season goes.

Yeah.

I watched the second episode.

It's ... not getting better.

It's not getting worse, but it's not getting better.

For some reason, it reminds me of Quark. I don't mean the Deep Space Nine character, but the old sci-fi comedy.

The third episode looked reminiscent of Star Trek.

There's nothing "reminiscent" about it.

I'm absolutely stunned they haven't been sued. This is TNG.

Given my lifelong love of TNG I am certain my love of this show makes sense then. I see it more as a TNG spinoff, a smaller ship, but the same basic story telling. Also it doesn't have the early TNG problems that were so annoying, this feels more like later TNG to me.

What I'm saying that The Orville is bringing attention to everything that Star Trek used to focus on. The first episode reminded us of Arbir Day. The second episode was a homage to the very first Star Trek episode, 'The Cage'. And the third episode brought forward a subject that exists in today's world.

For that, I think The Orville is going to be a good show. Especially since I won't be able to watch Star Trek: Discovery because of CBS' greediness.

Rant over.

It has problems all its own. It's vulgar, it's derivative, it's ham-handed, and its main defense against being called an illegal mutation of TNG, that of being a parody, dissolves the more it takes itself seriously. There's still a real chance that Paramount/Viacom might do an about face and file an injunction to keep it off the air. It's that similar to TNG. Its success might well be its doom.

I've liked each episode more, from perhaps two stars, to two-and-a-half, to three, and I'm not on the verge of abandoning it. It's more Trek than Abrams' first film.

I just think its very existence makes it a target if Trek's owners get another bug up their ass.
